Schedule for Week of 19 December:

Monday, 19 December: Complete assignment for CITR Chapters 8-10. Refer to the handout on the writing of the discussion question. Your response MUST be at least 4 to 6 sentences! Furthermore, you must include at LEAST FOUR POST-IT Notes with page numbers clearly indicated on each "sticky-note" . This is NOT optional-you must ATTACH the notes on a separate sheet of paper or on the reverse side of your discussion question. Do not forget the heading and the vocabulary word defined and a sentence using that vocabulary word.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: All assignments must be word-processed/typed-no exceptions and/or excuses-you have ample time to comply with this directive.

Please Note: The Paragraph/Quotation Assignment and the SAT Vocabulary tests for both Bands will be due on Thursdays and the test given on that day as well. I will NOT accept any late assignments and you will NOT be permitted to make-up any past-due assignments during 37 1/2 minutes.

The CITR reading assignments for Chapters 11-13 and Chapters 14-16 will be due by the end of the week. Specific dates will be announced in class on Monday, 19 December.

Please Note: I added +20 to everyone's quiz score for Chapters 1-7. Needless to say, I was disappointed by the results. Subsequently, you will be given a "surprise" quiz over the assigned readings for this week-you will not know in advance when this will take place. If anyone missed this quiz, you must make it up during 37 1/2 minutes on Monday, 19 December. (Only if you present a "legimate" absence note.)

For this week, we will discuss CITR and practice for the NYS English Regents.

Sunday, December 11, 2011

Schedule for Week of 12 December:

Please Note: Effective immediately, for both Bands, Quotation/Paragraph will be due on Thursdays and your SAT Vocabulary Test will be given on this day as well.
Also, your paragraphs MUST be typed/word-processed-there simply is not an excuse for not complying with this directive-you have a week to complete each paragraph. Furthermore, if you are absent-you MUST email it to me PRIOR TO THE START TIME OF YOUR CLASS and then hand me a "hard-copy" immediately upon your return to school-even if your class does not meet on the day you return to school-visit me in Room 404-do NOT place it in my mailbox in the General Office.

You will NOT be permitted to make-up any past-due assignments during 37 1/2 minutes.

Monday, 12 December: Turn-in Homework Assignment (Chapters 1-3) for The Catcher in the Rye-see handout (Vocabulary word with sentence and definition/Discussion Question with a one-paragraph response-4-6 sentences) Bring your novel to class everyday!

Reading Schedule for this Week: E Band Chapters 4-7 with written assignment-due Wednesday, 14 December and F Band your assignment is due on Thursday, 15 December.

Thursday, 15 December: Both Bands-Turn-in the next Quotation/Paragraph assignment-SAT Vocabulary Test List 12. PROJECT PROPOSALS DUE-TYPED!

Tuesday, 6 December: The Bad Seed continued. Writing Assignment Due Date: TBA

Wednesday, 7 December through Friday, 8 December: We will begin our work with Catcher and you will receive your PROJECT for this text-along with other "mini-assignments".

Dear Parents: Please review the video posted below on Plagiarism and explain to your child the seriousness of this offense. Sadly, several students from my classes (and I assume that they have committed this act in other classes-but they have not been caught) will face the consequences according to the NYC DOE Disciplinary Code and as described in my class contract.
Enforcement of Homework Policy: Please review the postings on this blog and on your class contract-I will NOT accept any past-due assignments NOR will you have the opportunity to complete any past-due assignments during 37 1/2 minutes!
Regents Essay Examination Booklets Due By the End of the school day on Tuesday, 29 November NOT on 1 December! Parents-Please Note: Your child has had over three weeks to complete this "HOMEWORK" Assignment. (Click on the link-download-print-and submit to Diedrich immediately!)
Schedule for Week of 28 November:
Monday, 28 November: Immediately upon entering the classroom, you will turn in the writing assignment described in an earlier post (see below). I will NOT accept any excuses for why you were unable to complete this assignment. You will have a "multiple choice" quiz on the assigned reading-The Masque of the Red Death (10 questions/7 minutes).
After the quiz, we will discuss the story and then begin discussing and analyzing Poe's Annabel Lee.

Tuesday, 29 November: We will continue the discussion of Annabel Lee and then review the writing of a Critical Lens Essay in preparation for the Poe Unit Test on Thursday, 1 December. (Click-on link and review vidio/power-oint posted below.)

Wednesday, 30 November: E Band-SAT Vocabulary Test List 10 and Paragraph/Quotation #11/F Band will have the SAT Vocabulary Test on Friday and will turn in the paragraph on that day as well.

Thursday, 1 December: POE UNIT TEST-A Critical Lens Essay (You may NOT use any resource material, but I do recommend that you review each text read prior to Thursday)

Friday, 2 December: F Band-SAT Vocabulary Test/Turn-in Paragraph Assignment.

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

Dear Parents: Please discuss this issue with your child. Too many students have been copying homework assignments from each other and "rather openly" cheating on our weekly SAT Vocabulary Tests.

Thank you...

Sunday, November 20, 2011

WONDERFUL NEWS! Diedrich would like you to have something to do over the Thanksgiving break, rather than annoying your siblings and parents. You are to read The Masque of the Red Death (text) and audio .

"My goodness! Did you actually think that Diedrich would only desire that you simply read the text of this story?" He posted the power points (videos) to assist you with the two-three page reader response that you will submit on Monday, 28 November-as you enter his classroom.

Your "focus" is on the identification of the "Classical Elements of American Gothic Literature." Refer to the ppt posted below and to the ppt with the same title of the story. You must not only cite specific specific textual details from the story, but you must also "engage" in
an analysis of those details-in other words- why is The Masque of the Red Death considered "Gothic." Have Fun!

Thursday, November 17, 2011

For Monday, 21 November: (E and F Bands)
Read The Pit and the Pendulum (Be prepared for a 5 question quiz on Monday.) Click on the title for both the text and an audio of the story.
We will spend Monday and Tuesday discussing this short story, along with another poem by Poe.
Homework for the Holiday Break Due Monday, 28 November: TBA

Sunday, November 13, 2011

Schedule for Week of 14 November:

A Reminder: Your PARODY of Poe's The Raven is due on Thursday, 17 November. If you are absent, the assignment MUST be emailed to me prior to the start of class-you must hand me a "hard-copy" upon returning to class-even if your Band is not meeting. I will provide assistance during 37 1/2 minutes on Monday or on Tuesday with this Parody project, but NOT on Wednesday, the day before the assignment is due. You must present a "draft" of the assignment, do not expect any assistance if you show me a "blank" piece of paper or something that is indicative of a minimal amount of effort.

Monday, 14 November and Tuesday, 15 November: Cooperative Learning Activity for The Cask of Amontillado. Before you join your assigned group, you will take a QUIZ for this story (5 questions/5 minutes) similar to the one you took previously. Please Parents: Direct your child to read this story before Monday. I have posted a link for the text and audio. Sadly, many of the children did not comply with my request to do so last week and subsequently failed the quiz.

Wednesday, 16 November through Friday, 18 November:
Poe's The Black Cat (This may give you nightmares-it is one of Diedrich's favorites.) Both E and F Band should read the story prior to Wednesday, (F Band -Do not wait until Thursday to do so). Naturally, you will take a quiz on this story. As you read the story (there is also an audio link), click on any highlighted vocabulary word-this will surely enhance your understanding of the text. there are also beneficial resources on this site that may be of interest.

Thursday, 17 November: Needless to say, Quotation/Paragraph Assignment (Week 10) is due and you will be tested on SAT Vocabulary List 9 words.

Saturday, November 12, 2011

A Reminder about Diedrich's Late-Assignment Policy:
When you are absent from class on a day an assignment is due, you must email me that assignment (with the time on the email indicating that it was sent prior to the meeting of that class) and then when you return to school-not to class-hand-me that assignment. Even if your "Band" is not meeting on the day you return, you must visit Diedrich in Room 404 and hand him that assignment. Furthermore, the "Quotation/Paragraph" assignment is known in advance, so there is simply no excuse for NOT completing it in a timely manner. For those of you who have NOT completed the TWO most recent assignments (The Raven criticism paragraph and the Quotation/Paragraph response due, Thursday, 10 November), you may do so under my supervision during the 37 1/2 minute tutorial session by Tuesday, 15 November. You assignment will be considered late and will receive a reduction in grade.

Dear Parents: My homework policy is explained on the class contract and in at least two postings on this blog, along with my numerous verbal explanations in class.
Please contact me if you have any questions and/or concerns.

Tuesday, November 8, 2011

Wonderful News! Everyone will be given a "second" chance to improve his/her score on a test for The Cask of Amontillado on Monday, 14 November. Diedrich does not have "ice water running through his veins"-if he did- he would enter every failing grade on jupitergrades for the quiz you took on Monday-most students scored in the range of "o to 60%"-two students did pass-imagine what your low score would do to your average...

You had ample time to read this story on-line-I even posted one with an audio-so you would be able to follow along! Yet, you did not do the reading-so now I am considering an extensive assignment for each reading that you do at home to make certain that you do indeed do the reading. No one is to blame but yourself. In two years, you will be sitting in a college classroom-now is the time to develop survival skills you will need for academic success. Why wait until the last minute to complete an assignment?

A WARNING ABOUT MONDAY'S QUIZ: Make sure you do a "close reading" of the story-perhaps, even read it twice!!! "I wonder why Diedrich is giving us this warning?"

Sunday, November 6, 2011

Schedule for Week of 7 November:

7 November, Monday: E and F Bands-Quiz on The Cask of Amontillado-5 questions only! We will begin examining Poe's The Raven (see links below for both selections). You will have TWO assignments for The Raven: The Raven Parody Assignment (click-on the assignment title for specific instructions) and a Paragraph Writing Assignment-specific details will be provided in class on Monday. Unfortunately, since we have a Band Schedule at LMGHS, the assignment for the Parody will not be due until Thursday, 17 November-we need to have TWO class sessions to discuss this text-and according to our schedule-the second class session for F Band will occur on Thursday-so I must be fair to both Bands and make the assignment due on 14 November. However, the paragraph for this text and the Quotation/Paragraph for Week 9 will be due on Thursday, 10 November. Also, your next SAT Vocabulary Test-List 8 will be given on this day.

DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE ENGLISH REGENTS ESSAY EXAMINATION BOOKLET ASSIGNMENT-THIS IS COUNTED AS A HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT-AN EASY 100% for all who submit it in a timely manner-I will soon enter a "zero" on jupitergrades for those who do not comply with this mandatory assignment! Please see post below for the link to this assignment.

Thursday, November 3, 2011

MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT: You must download and print your essay booklet for the NYS English Regents that you will take in January. You must turn-in this essay booklet by 1 December 2011. This is a HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT-You will receive a "0" if you fail to do so! If you have a "problem" with this, contact the NYS DOE!

Sunday, October 23, 2011

Schedule for Week of 24 October:

ATTENTION: If you were absent on Friday, 21 October-you must turn-in your PROJECT immediately upon entering the building. Do NOT wait until class time to do so! Furthermore, you must present an absentee note for this absence-or else I will not accept your PROJECT. I will enter this grade for the first-marking period so I must have it no later than 8:15!

Just a Reminder: Letter grades are entered for the first-marking period based on the LMGHS' grading policy and the NYC DOE grading policy-you have previously been advised that percentages are not "rounded-up" to the next letter-grade. For example, an 89% will receive a "B"-HOWEVER, that 89% is cumulative-so it will be averaged with the grade you receive for the second-marking period.

Week 7: Quote/Paragraph Assignment for BOTH Bands will be due on Thursday, 27 October. BOTH Bands will ALSO take the SAT Vocabulary Quiz for List 6 on Thursday.

Everyone is to bring The Crucible to class everyday this week.

College Now representatives will be visiting all English 11 classes on Tuesday, 25 October. This is a fabulous opportunity to complete TWO college classes even before you "officially" enter college.

Saturday, October 22, 2011

The Crucible Theme POSTER Project Assignment

Your grade for this PROJECT has been posted on Jupiter as a "numerical" grade-a "letter" grade will appear on your PROJECT. Note how I have attempted to "highlight" this word. Clearly, I had indicated that an 8 1/2 x 11 sized of sheet of paper will not serve this purpose-yet, several students did indeed turn-in their project on this size and even on a "smaller" sized sheet of paper.

I simply evaluated your PROJECT based on the criterion listed on the PROJECT sheet. Sadly, some students did not follow what was required or your response may have been incomplete or poorly done in respect to what was required.

Please Note: I received a project without a name written any where on the poster- email me immediately describing your assigned theme and the poster if you have received a "zero" for this assignment. For those students absent on Friday, 21 October-you must hand-in the assignment on Monday, 24 October so that I can omit the "zero' and enter the grade earned for this assignment.

Friday, October 14, 2011

Schedule for Week of 17 October:
Theme Poster Project Due on Friday, 21 October.
Bring The Crucible text to class EVERYDAY this week.

A Reminder-I do not accept late homework assignments-I have already reviewed what must be done if your printer is malfunctioning and/or if you are absent when an assignment is due.

Friday, 21 October: F Band -SAT Vocabulary Test-List 5
Week 6 Quote/Paragraph Due
Thursday, 20 October: E Band-SAT Vocabulary Test-List 5/Week 6 Quote/Paragraph Due

If you have not yet done so, view the videos/power-points that I have provided. (Click-on "older posts" to see them all.

Monday, October 10, 2011

A Reminder:
If you are absent on a day when an assignment is due, you are required to email me that assignment on the day it is due (not later that day) and then upon your return-as you enter the classroom-you are to hand me a "hard" copy of that assignment. Do not attempt to place an overdue assignment in your class folder on my desk. Recall-I DO NOT ACCEPT PAST-DUE ASSIGNMENTS-HOWEVER, FOR THIS MARKING PERIOD ONLY-I WILL PERMIT YOU TO MAKE-UP A MISSED QUOTATION/PARAGRAPH ASSIGNMENT DURING 371/2 MINUTES ONLY-UNDER MY SUPERVISION-IT MUST BE WRITTEN AT THAT TIME.

In addition, if you are absent on a day an SAT Vocabulary Quiz is given-you will only be given two days to make-up that quiz.

Saturday, October 8, 2011

I have posted a "new" conferencing topic on nicenet.org to help us to prepare for the class debate. The Crucible: Who is to blame...? (This is not just about Miller's play-recall why he wrote this play-you may want to review the videos/ppts on The Crucible and on the Red Scare/McCarthyism that I posted) DEADLINE: Friday, 14 October-23:59 Hours (that is one minute prior to midnight).

Bring your Crucible text everyday this week.

Conferencing on Nicenet.org
I am so thrilled by the postings and impressed by the replies that I have read thus far. Please keep in mind that you will receive a grade for your postings (I will distribute a rubric on Monday, 3 October).

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Just a Reminder:

Week 4: Quote/Paragraph response due Monday, 3 October.

Also, students in BOTH Bands-even though you may not have completed the reading of Act I of The Crucible-are required to post a quote from this Act to the Conferencing Topic on nicenet.org by Monday, 3 October. Refer to an earlier post regarding this assignment.

I recommend that everyone take notes on the information presented.

Sunday, September 25, 2011

CONFERENCING TOPIC:
Your posting to nicenet.org will begin soon. I will provide specific instructions on Monday, 26 September. If you have mis-placed the "Class Key" you must inform me of this (refer to the class contract for the guidelines that will direct you on how to "join the class". You should have done this already!

Salem Witch Trials of 1692

McCarthyism: Better Dead than Red Part 1

Salem Witchcraft Hysteria
An interactive activity-discover for yourself!

Saturday, September 24, 2011

Schedule for Week of 26 September:
Please bring The Crucible text to class on BOTH of the meeting days for your class this week. Since this is considered a HOMEWORK assignment, failure to do so will result in a "ZERO"!

You will receive a "study/assignment packet" on Monday indicating exactly what will be required during our reading of this text. Since this is a play-which is intended to be heard and/or read aloud-we will always discuss a specific section of an Act prior to a given assignment.

I also expect you to bring the required THREE-RING BINDER to class everyday day we meet.

NOTE: With assistance, I will probably have your grades posted on Jupiter Gradebook by the end of the day on Monday, 26 September. I do have all of your grades recorded in a "paper" grade-book- so I only have to transfer them to an on-line program. If you are curious about the specific Quotation/Paragraph assignments, stop by during 371/2 minutes on Monday.

I am "thrilled" with how well everyone has been doing responding to the specific quotes. Since this is what is required on the Critical Lens Essay of the NYS English Regents, everyone will be well-prepared on the test day in January. Integrating literary texts into the paragraphs has impressed me most of all. Soon, I may make this mandatory.

As indicated last-week, you will not be given the SAT Vocabulary Test for List 3 this week NOR do you have to complete the Quote/Paragraph Assignment for "Week 4". However, both E and F Bands WILL TURN IN THIS PARAGRAPH RESPONSE ON MONDAY, 3 OCTOBER. A prudent student will have these paragraphs written ahead of time.

Repeatedly, you were informed-on this blog and verbally by Diedrich-that THREE words from the previous week's SAT Vocabulary Test would appear on the next test. Sadly, several students from both Bands did not take note of this, resulting in a score of 80% rather than a score of 100%! (Yet, these students were able to recall the meaning of at least one of the words from the previous list.)

If you have not yet done so, please review the power-points/videos I posted on the Puritans and on Joe McCarthy-the Red Scare. You may have to click-on "older posts" to do so. Diedrich may give you a "surprise" quiz on the information presented.

Sunday, September 18, 2011

Schedule for Week of 19 September:

NOTE: I am sure that everyone is anxious about his/her Summer Reading Test Results. The objective tests have been graded and I am in the process of evaluating your written responses for The Color Purple using a "generous" rubric designed for the in-class writing of essays (drafts). Do not hold your breath about receiving the results on Monday-I can not make that promise to you. Even though there was not a single question that the majority of the classes scored incorrectly-I added four points to everyone's score on The Color Purple test (50 questions/2 pts off for each) and I added five points to everyone's score on the Inherit the Wind test (47 questions/2 pts off for each). Sadly, there were still failures-yet, even without the addition of points-some of your classmates had received a 100%. For some, I got the impression that the texts were not read!

Monday, 19 September

We will complete the discussion of The World on the Turtle's Back and begin the preparation for Jonathan Edward's Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.
This will involve listening to the sermon first (preparation for your NYS English Regents-Part One-Listening-in January 2012) while taking notes (that will be collected and graded). We will then have a whole-class discussion-your overall reaction-"What makes this SERMON so famous? Why is it taught in American Literature classes at both the high school and college levels?" Next, you will be randomly assigned to a small group to complete an activity that your group will eventually present to the class-each group will be assigned different questions. Obviously, this will take us several class periods to complete.

DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS: Weekly Paragraphs in response to a quote (see handout-only one) and your SAT Vocabulary Tests-for this week List 2-SEVEN words-study all THIRTY-and THREE words from List 1 (E Band-Thursday is your day for this since your class does not meet on Friday. F Band SAT Test and paragraph due on Friday.

Thursday, 22 September

Book Distribution: The Crucible-bring you ID card!

"Why in the world did Diedrich post this video when he told us we would be reading The Crucible?"

Monday, September 12, 2011

ATTENTION STUDENTS: I have decided that you will only have to complete a writing assessment for The Color Purple on Tuesday, 13 September. You may also complete the test on Inherit the Wind if you need the additional time. Review your notes and visit the site I have provided below to prepare for your written response.

Saturday, September 10, 2011

Monday, 12 September: Just a reminder (see earlier post): The Color Purple objective test. Once you complete it, you will then receive the Inherit the Wind objective test. Since many of you probably completed the reading of BOTH texts during the early part of the summer, I am providing a resource to "refresh" your memory-Shmoop Reading Guides (click on this link).

NEVER substitute a reading guide for the reading of an actual text.

NOTE: Clicking on "Older Posts" will reveal additional sources to help you prepare for the Summer Reading Assessments.

Please turn-in your student contract signed if you have not yet done so. Indicate your learning style on the contract.

E-Band: Your paragraph response for the Week 1 Quotation is due on Monday, 12 September since your class does not meet on Fridays. From now on, your response to the quotations will be due on Thursdays.

Your Band will take the Short answer assessment (paragraph/essay) for The Color Purple text the next day your class is scheduled to meet. We will have a discussion of both texts focusing on the Grade 11 Theme of Movement and Progress later in the week and throughout the year integrating another texts as well.

Soon, I will post a Conferencing topic (prompt) on Nicenet for Inherit the Wind with deadlines for the posting of your response and for the "Reply" that you will post in response to a classmate's response.

Thursday/Friday: 15/16 September- SAT Vocabulary Test-LIST 1. If you band does not meet on Friday, 16 September-you will take your test on Thursday. Binder checks will be conducted on these days. Paragraph response for Week 2 also due on those days.

A Reminder: You must study ALL 30 words on the list! You will be tested on 10 of those words. See earlier post regarding the SAT Vocabulary Tests.

Summer Reading Assessment
Please be advised that you will be administered an "objective" test and a short answer test (2-3 paragraphs) over your assigned reading: The Color Purple/Inherit the Wind on Monday, 12 September.

Later in the week, we will engage in a class discussion of those texts. Please keep in mind that these literary works could very well be used on the CRITICAL LENS section of the NYS English Regents (January 2012).

Sunday, September 4, 2011

Homework Assignment (9/8) Due Friday (9/9)

Refer to handout: "Weekly Quotations/Writing Prompts" and respond to a quote listed for Week #1.

Required Summer Reading

Please Note: Prior to having a student-led discussion on the TWO required summer reading texts, you will be assigned an in-class essay. This means that you are expected to have read BOTH texts thoroughly before the first day of class on Thursday, 8 September. (Do not rely on Sparknotes, Bookrags, Grade-Saver or any other resource for the summary and analysis for the readings.)
