Dear Parents: Please review the video posted below on Plagiarism and explain to your child the seriousness of this offense. Sadly, several students from my classes (and I assume that they have committed this act in other classes-but they have not been caught) will face the consequences according to the NYC DOE Disciplinary Code and as described in my class contract.

WONDERFUL NEWS! Diedrich would like you to have something to do over the Thanksgiving break, rather than annoying your siblings and parents. You are to read The Masque of the Red Death (text) and audio .
"My goodness! Did you actually think that Diedrich would only desire that you simply read the text of this story?" He posted the power points (videos) to assist you with the two-three page reader response that you will submit on Monday, 28 November-as you enter his classroom.
Your "focus" is on the identification of the "Classical Elements of American Gothic Literature." Refer to the ppt posted below and to the ppt with the same title of the story. You must not only cite specific specific textual details from the story, but you must also "engage" in
an analysis of those details-in other words- why is The Masque of the Red Death considered "Gothic." Have Fun!

Schedule for Week of 14 November:
A Reminder: Your PARODY of Poe's The Raven is due on Thursday, 17 November. If you are absent, the assignment MUST be emailed to me prior to the start of class-you must hand me a "hard-copy" upon returning to class-even if your Band is not meeting. I will provide assistance during 37 1/2 minutes on Monday or on Tuesday with this Parody project, but NOT on Wednesday, the day before the assignment is due. You must present a "draft" of the assignment, do not expect any assistance if you show me a "blank" piece of paper or something that is indicative of a minimal amount of effort.
Monday, 14 November and Tuesday, 15 November: Cooperative Learning Activity for The Cask of Amontillado. Before you join your assigned group, you will take a QUIZ for this story (5 questions/5 minutes) similar to the one you took previously. Please Parents: Direct your child to read this story before Monday. I have posted a link for the text and audio. Sadly, many of the children did not comply with my request to do so last week and subsequently failed the quiz.
Wednesday, 16 November through Friday, 18 November:
Poe's The Black Cat (This may give you nightmares-it is one of Diedrich's favorites.) Both E and F Band should read the story prior to Wednesday, (F Band -Do not wait until Thursday to do so). Naturally, you will take a quiz on this story. As you read the story (there is also an audio link), click on any highlighted vocabulary word-this will surely enhance your understanding of the text. there are also beneficial resources on this site that may be of interest.
Thursday, 17 November: Needless to say, Quotation/Paragraph Assignment (Week 10) is due and you will be tested on SAT Vocabulary List 9 words.

A Reminder about Diedrich's Late-Assignment Policy:
When you are absent from class on a day an assignment is due, you must email me that assignment (with the time on the email indicating that it was sent prior to the meeting of that class) and then when you return to school-not to class-hand-me that assignment. Even if your "Band" is not meeting on the day you return, you must visit Diedrich in Room 404 and hand him that assignment. Furthermore, the "Quotation/Paragraph" assignment is known in advance, so there is simply no excuse for NOT completing it in a timely manner. For those of you who have NOT completed the TWO most recent assignments (The Raven criticism paragraph and the Quotation/Paragraph response due, Thursday, 10 November), you may do so under my supervision during the 37 1/2 minute tutorial session by Tuesday, 15 November. You assignment will be considered late and will receive a reduction in grade.
Dear Parents: My homework policy is explained on the class contract and in at least two postings on this blog, along with my numerous verbal explanations in class.
Please contact me if you have any questions and/or concerns.

Wonderful News! Everyone will be given a "second" chance to improve his/her score on a test for The Cask of Amontillado on Monday, 14 November. Diedrich does not have "ice water running through his veins"-if he did- he would enter every failing grade on jupitergrades for the quiz you took on Monday-most students scored in the range of "o to 60%"-two students did pass-imagine what your low score would do to your average...
You had ample time to read this story on-line-I even posted one with an audio-so you would be able to follow along! Yet, you did not do the reading-so now I am considering an extensive assignment for each reading that you do at home to make certain that you do indeed do the reading. No one is to blame but yourself. In two years, you will be sitting in a college classroom-now is the time to develop survival skills you will need for academic success. Why wait until the last minute to complete an assignment?
A WARNING ABOUT MONDAY'S QUIZ: Make sure you do a "close reading" of the story-perhaps, even read it twice!!! "I wonder why Diedrich is giving us this warning?"
