Just a Reminder:

Week 4: Quote/Paragraph response due Monday, 3 October.

Also, students in BOTH Bands-even though you may not have completed the reading of Act I of The Crucible-are required to post a quote from this Act to the Conferencing Topic on nicenet.org by Monday, 3 October. Refer to an earlier post regarding this assignment.

I recommend that everyone take notes on the information presented.

Schedule for Week of 26 September:
Please bring The Crucible text to class on BOTH of the meeting days for your class this week. Since this is considered a HOMEWORK assignment, failure to do so will result in a "ZERO"!

You will receive a "study/assignment packet" on Monday indicating exactly what will be required during our reading of this text. Since this is a play-which is intended to be heard and/or read aloud-we will always discuss a specific section of an Act prior to a given assignment.

I also expect you to bring the required THREE-RING BINDER to class everyday day we meet.

NOTE: With assistance, I will probably have your grades posted on Jupiter Gradebook by the end of the day on Monday, 26 September. I do have all of your grades recorded in a "paper" grade-book- so I only have to transfer them to an on-line program. If you are curious about the specific Quotation/Paragraph assignments, stop by during 371/2 minutes on Monday.

I am "thrilled" with how well everyone has been doing responding to the specific quotes. Since this is what is required on the Critical Lens Essay of the NYS English Regents, everyone will be well-prepared on the test day in January. Integrating literary texts into the paragraphs has impressed me most of all. Soon, I may make this mandatory.

As indicated last-week, you will not be given the SAT Vocabulary Test for List 3 this week NOR do you have to complete the Quote/Paragraph Assignment for "Week 4". However, both E and F Bands WILL TURN IN THIS PARAGRAPH RESPONSE ON MONDAY, 3 OCTOBER. A prudent student will have these paragraphs written ahead of time.

Repeatedly, you were informed-on this blog and verbally by Diedrich-that THREE words from the previous week's SAT Vocabulary Test would appear on the next test. Sadly, several students from both Bands did not take note of this, resulting in a score of 80% rather than a score of 100%! (Yet, these students were able to recall the meaning of at least one of the words from the previous list.)

If you have not yet done so, please review the power-points/videos I posted on the Puritans and on Joe McCarthy-the Red Scare. You may have to click-on "older posts" to do so. Diedrich may give you a "surprise" quiz on the information presented.

Schedule for Week of 19 September:

NOTE: I am sure that everyone is anxious about his/her Summer Reading Test Results. The objective tests have been graded and I am in the process of evaluating your written responses for The Color Purple using a "generous" rubric designed for the in-class writing of essays (drafts). Do not hold your breath about receiving the results on Monday-I can not make that promise to you. Even though there was not a single question that the majority of the classes scored incorrectly-I added four points to everyone's score on The Color Purple test (50 questions/2 pts off for each) and I added five points to everyone's score on the Inherit the Wind test (47 questions/2 pts off for each). Sadly, there were still failures-yet, even without the addition of points-some of your classmates had received a 100%. For some, I got the impression that the texts were not read!

Monday, 19 September

We will complete the discussion of The World on the Turtle's Back and begin the preparation for Jonathan Edward's Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.
This will involve listening to the sermon first (preparation for your NYS English Regents-Part One-Listening-in January 2012) while taking notes (that will be collected and graded). We will then have a whole-class discussion-your overall reaction-"What makes this SERMON so famous? Why is it taught in American Literature classes at both the high school and college levels?" Next, you will be randomly assigned to a small group to complete an activity that your group will eventually present to the class-each group will be assigned different questions. Obviously, this will take us several class periods to complete.

DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS: Weekly Paragraphs in response to a quote (see handout-only one) and your SAT Vocabulary Tests-for this week List 2-SEVEN words-study all THIRTY-and THREE words from List 1 (E Band-Thursday is your day for this since your class does not meet on Friday. F Band SAT Test and paragraph due on Friday.

Thursday, 22 September

Book Distribution: The Crucible-bring you ID card!

"Why in the world did Diedrich post this video when he told us we would be reading The Crucible?"

Monday, September 12, 2011

ATTENTION STUDENTS: I have decided that you will only have to complete a writing assessment for The Color Purple on Tuesday, 13 September. You may also complete the test on Inherit the Wind if you need the additional time. Review your notes and visit the site I have provided below to prepare for your written response.

Saturday, September 10, 2011

Monday, 12 September: Just a reminder (see earlier post): The Color Purple objective test. Once you complete it, you will then receive the Inherit the Wind objective test. Since many of you probably completed the reading of BOTH texts during the early part of the summer, I am providing a resource to "refresh" your memory-Shmoop Reading Guides (click on this link).

NEVER substitute a reading guide for the reading of an actual text.

NOTE: Clicking on "Older Posts" will reveal additional sources to help you prepare for the Summer Reading Assessments.

Please turn-in your student contract signed if you have not yet done so. Indicate your learning style on the contract.

E-Band: Your paragraph response for the Week 1 Quotation is due on Monday, 12 September since your class does not meet on Fridays. From now on, your response to the quotations will be due on Thursdays.

Your Band will take the Short answer assessment (paragraph/essay) for The Color Purple text the next day your class is scheduled to meet. We will have a discussion of both texts focusing on the Grade 11 Theme of Movement and Progress later in the week and throughout the year integrating another texts as well.

Soon, I will post a Conferencing topic (prompt) on Nicenet for Inherit the Wind with deadlines for the posting of your response and for the "Reply" that you will post in response to a classmate's response.

Thursday/Friday: 15/16 September- SAT Vocabulary Test-LIST 1. If you band does not meet on Friday, 16 September-you will take your test on Thursday. Binder checks will be conducted on these days. Paragraph response for Week 2 also due on those days.

A Reminder: You must study ALL 30 words on the list! You will be tested on 10 of those words. See earlier post regarding the SAT Vocabulary Tests.

Summer Reading Assessment
Please be advised that you will be administered an "objective" test and a short answer test (2-3 paragraphs) over your assigned reading: The Color Purple/Inherit the Wind on Monday, 12 September.

Later in the week, we will engage in a class discussion of those texts. Please keep in mind that these literary works could very well be used on the CRITICAL LENS section of the NYS English Regents (January 2012).
